Dingwall Academy Memorial

This is the war memorial plaque which was displayed in the Dingwall Academy of 1939-2008 and is now in the foyer of its successor. Many of the names on the plaque will feature in Dingwall's main memorial. [Photo RCHS]

Cambrai War Memorial

After the memorable battle of Cambrai, towards the close of I9I7, a mound of stones, with a tall wooden cross surmounting, was erected to the memory of the Seaforth Territorials who fell during the strenuous fighting, the moving story of which is told in the "History of the 51st (Highland) Division" (published by Blackwoods), which also gives prominence to the gallant part played by the territorial Seaforths on other parts of the fighting line. Plaque at Dingwall Railway Station

The plaque reads: This railway station was used as a tea stall for sailors and soldiers from 20th September 1915 until 12th April 1919 in connection with the Ross and Cromarty County Branch Red Cross Society during which period 134,864 men were supplied with tea.

Sergeant John Meikle Memorial

This Memorial presently stands in the Square at the Railway Station in Dingwall. It was originally erected at Nitshill Station, Glasgow and was unveiled there in January 1920 by Lady Lorimer. This seven-foot high rough-hewn slab of granite inscribed and embellished with carvings of a rifle and laurel wreaths was removed from the station to protect it from damage by vandals and re-erected in the station square, Dingwall in 1971. The inscription on the memorial reads as follows: In Memory Of Serg't. John Meikle, V.C., M.M. Late Clerk at Nitshill Station who enlisted in H.M. Forces (Seaforth Highlanders 8th February 1915 during the Great War and was killed in action on 20th.July 1918. Erected by his Railway Comrades.
