CEREMONY BY MRS MACKENZIE OF ORD

The village of Tarradale, Muir of Ord was the scene of a pretty little ceremony in 1902 with the lighting of new village lamps for the first time. The ceremony was performed by Mrs Mackenzie of Ord, who was accompanied by Mrs Fraser of Bunchrew, her daughter and Mr Arbuthnott. Mrs Mackenzie had been enthusiastic in promoting the new lighting scheme and on lighting the first lamp she declared the lighting would be a great improvement and it was all due to the efforts of the committee who had brought the scheme to fruition.
She then spoke to her audience of what Muir of Ord was like when she first came to the village upon her marriage to Alexander Watson Mackenzie of Ord in 1857:
At that time there were two houses- one was a small, unpretentious thatched cottage, which did duty as a post office. There was not a slip to put the letter in, but there was a very energetic man, called a runner, who collected them, Mrs MacKenzie was not sure whether there was post every day or every second day. Then the other house was also a thatched one and was occupied by Mr Fraser, innkeeper. It stood on the site of the present Tarradale Hotel. At that time Muir of Ord was not much of a place. It could hardly be called a village; it was only a spot.
