Book Library

While building this site we have accumulated a lot of information that we felt was best gathered together in different books.  We hope you will enjoy reading them.

These documents are reproduced by kind permission of the author, Anne Gordon, who reserves all rights pertaining to her work.

Anne Gordon died on 29 September 2015 and RCHS wishes to reiterate appreciation of her willingness to share her work, which is a wonderful legacy to leave behind.

Photograph Library

Over the years we have been very fortunate to have been given access to many historic photographs and permission to display them on the website.  We have now collated them into different albums.  We hope you enjoy viewing in them.

Welcome to this collection of photographs from Nigg Parish. The bulk of these photograph have been provided by Mrs Liz  Whiteford, who also has the originals. The photographs were presented in three albums on the original RCHS website, but as the topics are similar in each album it has been decided to amalgamate them under the headings formerly listed.

Left to right: "Ladybird" Johnson, Janie Robertson, Sir Philip Southwell and John Robertson. The Johnson family owned 40% of Brown and Root hence Labybird's visit to the Nigg site. The story goes that Mrs Rhind saw mention of the development going to Spain, alerted John Robertson and they rushed down to London to try and persuade the development be brought to Nigg instead of Spain. Sir Philip Southwell came north and they laid on a police escort to Nigg from the airport and back and thereafter it was agreed Nigg would be the chosen site. This explains Ladybird's visit to Castlecraig. Jamie Stone might have written an article for the Ross-shire Journal about the visit to London by Mrs Rhind and John Robertson based on information from Mrs Rhind during her lifetime.

The photos in this album are from the Ross-shire Journal during the 1914-1918 War. Newspaper copies had been deposited with Dingwall Museum but over the years had become rather fragile and were in danger of disintegrating and so it was felt that this valuable record should not be lost.
