The week leading to the 100th anniversary of the ending of the First World War saw the culmination of Ullapool High School's World War 1 commemoration project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Historic Environment Scotland.
The pupils gathered stories of men who left the Lochbroom area to fight in the War. During their research they worked with local museum staff and surviving relatives; they visited museums in Scotland, Belgium and France to explore why these men left and what they went through.
A lasting memorial has been created in the form of a glass bowl filled with stones from the shores of Lochbroom, each with a soldier's name on it. Stones were collected from the beach at Altnaharrie, where some of the soldiers stood on their last night in Lochbroom.
