TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF OUR SONS, OUR BROTHERS AND OUR FRIENDS FROM THIS PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR
* 1914 - 1919 *



The Ross-shire Journal of May 1923 reported as follows:

"Contin and District people have done honour to their dead in the monument they have erected in the village to the memory of its sons, who fell in the Great War.
"The monument is one of the most original and unique in the county. The unveiling ceremony was carried out by Colonel A F Mackenzie of Ord, CMG, MVO, who was supported by Colonel D Mason-Macfarlane of Turin, CMG, CBE, who was tenant of Craigdarroch when War broke out.
Names inscribed on the memorial are: Captain R Ernest English, Captain Carlyon W Mason-Macfarlane, Seaforth Highlanders. Cpl Alick Matheson, Tarvie; L/Cpl Alick Ross, Torachilty; Pte Hugh Mackenzie, Torachiltyside; Pte Alick Maclean, Riverside; Pte Norman Macleod, Jamestown; Pte Donald Chisholm, Moy Bridge; Cameron Highlanders. Pte John Stuart, Pte Hugh W Stuart and Pte Alexander Stuart, all of Little Moy; Scots Guards. Sgt Hugh Tolmie, Contin; Black Watch. Piper D Stewart, Elswick; Royal Engineers. Sapper George Mackenzie, Wester Moy; Northampton Regiment. Pte Christopher Macrae, Kinellan; Pte John MacAulay, Aultnabreac; Hampshire Regiment. Pte Peter Macrae, Kinellan; Canadian Infantry."

IN THE DAY OF THE ORDEAL THEY ENDURED, NOT COUNTING THE COST FOR THE SAKE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS AND TRUTH THEY RENDERED THE SUPREME SACRIFICE - THEIR LIFE.  WE HERE HIGHLY RESOLVE THAT THESE DEAD SHALL NOT HAVE DIED IN VAIN.
